Character Split
Works from Clarke Curtis and Tyler Zeleny
Curated by Alex Tapié
Conjured through peculiar collages sourced from cut up computer-generated images and kid’s disposable party plates, and by surreal imagery drawn with unerring draftsmanship, the imagined characters created by Clarke Curtis and Tyler Zeleny differ only in their form and narrative. Personified through bold, black and white prints, and playful, multicolored combinations, both sets of characters convey human attributes and gestures that encourage the viewer to imagine hypothetical conversations or confrontations,
Zeleny’s nod to mythological imagery presents figures with archetypal traits, specifying roles into identifiable categories of protagonist and antagonist, and conveys the artist’s personal ideologies about social and political structures. In contrast, Curtis’s characters are colorful and idiosyncratic, conveying the kinks, snags and confusion of youth through his characters’ portrayal of self-conscious silence, awkward humor, and sense of arrested development.
