Formulated Play

Formulated Play is a geometric exercise perpetuating the idea that symmetry seen in shapes known as regular polyhedra give us insight as to how our physical universe is organized. Whether as Plato’s four classical elements, as the proportions of Kepler’s solar system, or the bonded structures of molecules, regular polyhedra still carry undeniable relevance. In examining regular convex polyhedra, and the more recently described non-regular convex polyhedra, Formulated Play is about understanding and exploiting the nature of how regular polygons fit together.
Due to the inherent ability of these shapes to create structure, each piece poses the question of interior and exterior space in regards to volume. While the show is not overtly about process, a multitude of materials and processes are used to highlight the strengths of the geometric forms and patterns. This formal three-dimensional study culminates in colorful and lively work that evokes a sense of youthful play, with mature acumen.
